What it is

What microneedling does

Microneedling uses a fine-needled device to create thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Your skin treats them as small injuries and responds the way it always does, by producing fresh collagen. The needling isn’t really the treatment. The healing is.

That makes it one of the most reliable options for skin texture: acne scarring, enlarged pores, rough patches and fine lines.

Medical microneedling is a different treatment from an at-home roller. It’s carried out in clinic and tailored to your skin at every session.

Your course

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

A course of three treatments is the usual starting point, spaced about a month apart, so each session builds on the collagen response from the last.

Results build gradually and keep improving for several months after the course finishes. Deeper scarring may need more sessions, and Lara will tell you honestly at your consultation.

Your appointment

What happens at your microneedling appointment

Your skin is cleansed and numbing cream is applied, then the device is passed over the treatment area. Most people feel a prickling or vibrating sensation rather than pain.

Afterwards your skin will look flushed, similar to mild sunburn. This usually settles within a day or two.

Aftercare

Microneedling aftercare

For the first 24 hours, keep your skin clean and avoid make-up, exercise that makes you sweat, swimming and saunas. Use only the gentle products Lara recommends, and avoid strong active ingredients such as retinoids and acids for a few days.

Sun protection matters for the following weeks, so use a high-factor SPF every day. You’ll leave with written aftercare instructions and a way to contact the clinic if anything worries you.

Questions

Microneedling questions

Does microneedling help acne scars?

It prompts new collagen, which can soften the look of some acne scarring over a course. How much depends on the type and depth of scarring, which is why it’s assessed at your consultation.

Does microneedling hurt?

Numbing cream is applied first. Most people feel prickling or vibration rather than pain.

How long is the downtime?

Most people look flushed for a day or two, similar to mild sunburn, and can return to normal routines quickly. Plan it around a quiet day rather than an event.

Can I do microneedling at home instead?

At-home rollers work at a much shallower level and can’t be tailored to your skin in the same way. Medical microneedling is carried out in clinic, with your skin assessed first.

How much does microneedling cost?

The price depends on whether you have a single treatment or a course, so it’s confirmed at your consultation once Lara has assessed your skin.

You’ll have the full cost in writing before you decide anything, and there’s no obligation to go ahead.

Is microneedling suitable for everyone?

Not always. It isn’t carried out over active breakouts, infection or broken skin, or during pregnancy, and the clinic doesn’t treat anyone under eighteen.

Lara will go through your skin and medical history before recommending anything.
