Lip filler aftercare: what to do and avoid after treatment

October 21, 2026•3 min read

Lip filler aftercare is simple, but it matters. What you do in the first day or two helps swelling settle and gives the treated area a calm start. Here's what Lara Eastwood, our Registered Nurse, tells people after a lip filler treatment in Mansfield.

What's normal straight after lip filler?

Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common, and they settle on their own. For a few days your lips will look and feel fuller than the final result, so try not to judge the shape straight away.

What should I avoid for the first 24 hours after lip filler?

For the first 24 hours, avoid make-up on your lips, alcohol and strenuous exercise. Try not to press or massage your lips unless you've been told to. Keeping things simple for that first day gives your lips the best chance to settle.

How long should I avoid saunas, steam rooms and hot drinks?

Saunas, steam rooms and very hot drinks are best left for a couple of days. Give your lips a little time to settle before you go back to them.

How long does swelling last after lip filler?

Your lips will usually look fuller than the final result for a few days, and the final shape is usually clear after about two weeks. Everyone is different: some people swell more than others, and bruising varies from person to person. That's why it's worth waiting before deciding how you feel about the result.

How far before an event should I have lip filler?

At least two weeks before. That gives swelling and any bruising time to settle, so if you have a wedding, a holiday or a big occasion coming up, plan your appointment around it.

When should I contact the clinic after lip filler?

Whenever something worries you. You'll be given written aftercare instructions to take home and a way to contact the clinic, so you're never left guessing. If you're unsure whether something is normal, call us on 01623 461 723 and we'll talk it through.

Will I need a follow-up or a top-up?

Lara often suggests starting with a smaller amount and reviewing at a follow-up, because it's easy to add a little more once any swelling has gone. How long lip filler lasts varies: for many people it's somewhere between six and twelve months, and your likely top-up timescale is discussed at your consultation. We explain why it varies in how long does lip filler last?

Who carries out lip filler at The Mansfield Park Clinic?

Every lip treatment is planned and carried out by Lara Eastwood, a Registered Nurse with 19 years in the NHS and 12 in aesthetics. It starts with a consultation about what you'd like to change and your medical history, because lip filler isn't always suitable. It isn't offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the clinic doesn't treat anyone under eighteen.
