How long does lip filler last? A nurse's honest answer
The short answer: for many people, lip filler lasts somewhere between six and twelve months. The honest answer is that it varies from person to person, and anyone who gives you a fixed date before they've seen your lips is guessing.
Here's what decides how long yours lasts, how you'll know it's fading, and when a top-up makes sense.
What lip filler is made of
Most lip filler is a soft gel made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already makes. Because it's familiar to the body, it's broken down gradually over time. That's why lip filler is temporary, and why results fade slowly rather than disappearing overnight.
What affects how long lip filler lasts
There's no single number because several things play a part:
The product. Fillers are made to different thicknesses for different jobs. A softer gel suited to the lips behaves differently from a firmer one used elsewhere on the face.
How much is placed. A subtle 0.5ml treatment and a fuller 1ml treatment won't follow exactly the same timeline.
Where it sits. Your lips move every time you talk, eat and smile. Areas that move a lot tend to sit at the shorter end of the range.
Your own body. Everyone breaks filler down at their own pace. Two people with the same treatment can see quite different timelines.
Industry guidance from the Joint Council for Cosmetic Practitioners puts dermal filler at six to eighteen months on average, depending on the product and where it's used. Lips are usually nearer the start of that range.
How you'll know it's fading
Lip filler doesn't switch off. Most people notice a gradual softening: the border of the lip looks a little less defined, or the fullness isn't quite what it was. Your lips return towards how they looked before treatment.
When a top-up makes sense
There's no set schedule, and you don't have to have a top-up at all. Some people like to keep their result topped up; others are happy to let it fade and decide later.
At The Mansfield Park Clinic, Lara will give you a realistic timescale for your lips at your consultation, including when a top-up might make sense for you. She often suggests starting small and reviewing at a follow-up, because it's easy to add a little more and the aim is always lips that look like your own.
Looking after your lips in the first few days
Good aftercare helps your lips settle well. For the first 24 hours, avoid make-up on the lips, alcohol and strenuous exercise, and try not to press or massage the area unless you've been told to. Saunas, steam rooms and very hot drinks are best left for a couple of days.
Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common and settle on their own. The final shape is usually clear after about two weeks, so if you have a wedding or holiday coming up, book at least two weeks before it.
Why who treats you matters
How long filler lasts is only part of the picture. A good result also depends on who plans and places it. Before you book anywhere, ask who will carry out your treatment and what their background is. If they're a nurse, you can check them on the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.
Every lip treatment at The Mansfield Park Clinic is planned and carried out by Lara Eastwood, a Registered Nurse with nineteen years in the NHS and twelve in aesthetics. It always starts with a consultation, where Lara goes through your medical history and looks at your lips and face as a whole before recommending anything. Lip filler isn't offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the clinic doesn't treat anyone under eighteen.
