0.5ml or 1ml lip filler? How to choose the right amount
If you're thinking about lip filler, one of the first questions is usually how much. Most lip treatments use either 0.5ml or 1ml. Neither is "better". They do different jobs, and the right one depends on your lips, what you'd like to change and whether you've had filler before. At our clinic, every lip filler treatment in Mansfield starts with that conversation.
What's the difference between 0.5ml and 1ml lip filler?
0.5ml is the subtle option, and 1ml gives a more noticeable change. Both use the same thing: a soft hyaluronic acid gel, placed in small amounts to add volume, sharpen the border of the lip or even out the difference between the top and bottom lip. The amount simply decides how much change there is room for.
Is 0.5ml of lip filler enough?
For many people, yes. 0.5ml suits a first treatment, a light top-up, or anyone who wants definition rather than obvious volume. If what you'd mostly like is a crisper lip border or a little more shape, 0.5ml is often a good place to start.
When is 1ml of lip filler the better choice?
1ml suits lips that need more support, or more balancing between the top and bottom lip. It gives a more noticeable change than 0.5ml, but that doesn't mean it has to look overdone. Whichever amount you have, the aim is a natural look: Lara works in small amounts and plans around the natural shape of your mouth.
Does the amount change how long lip filler lasts?
It can play a part. For many people lip filler lasts somewhere between six and twelve months, depending on the product used, how much is placed and how quickly their body breaks it down. A 0.5ml and a 1ml treatment won't follow exactly the same timeline, and everyone is different. We cover this in more detail in how long does lip filler last?
Can I start with 0.5ml and add more later?
Yes, and it's a sensible way to begin. Lara often suggests starting small and reviewing at a follow-up, because it's easy to add a little more and the aim is always lips that look like your own. You don't have to decide everything at your first appointment.
What happens on the day, whichever amount you choose?
The appointment is much the same for both. It starts with a consultation about what you'd like to change and your medical history. A numbing cream is applied first and the filler is placed with a very fine needle. Most people feel pressure and mild stinging rather than pain.
Swelling, tenderness and small bruises are common and settle on their own. The final shape is usually clear after about two weeks, so if you have a wedding or holiday coming up, book at least two weeks before it. For the first 24 hours, avoid make-up on the lips, alcohol, strenuous exercise and pressing on your lips. Saunas, steam rooms and hot drinks are best left for several days. You'll be given written aftercare instructions to take home.
How do I know which amount is right for me?
That's what the consultation is for. Every lip treatment at The Mansfield Park Clinic is planned and carried out by Lara Eastwood, a Registered Nurse with 19 years in the NHS and 12 in aesthetics. She'll look at your lips and face as a whole, talk through what you'd like, and explain which amount she'd suggest and why. The cost is agreed at your consultation and given to you in writing before you go ahead.
Lip filler isn't offered during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and the clinic doesn't treat anyone under eighteen.
